What is your main area(s) of interest/expertise?

I am working on two things: synthetic biology and single cell biotechnology. On synthetic biology, we develop reprogrammable cells (Simple cell or SimCells) as a platform for synthetic biology. SimCells can be applied to biocatalysts, medical diagnosis, drug delivery and potentially vaccines. On single cell biotechnology, we develop single cell Raman technology to link genotype and phenotype at the single cell level. We also designed and built Raman activated cell sorting technology.

What are you working on right now?

Right now, I am trying to develop a rapid diagnosis technology for the detection of coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. We apply SimCells to drug biotransformation and cancer therapy. We also use Raman technology to understand the metabolism of human cells and microorganisms.

Why is Oxford a good place to work in this field of research?

Oxford is a great place working on synthetic biology and molecular biology, as Oxford has brilliant scientists covering almost all expertise on the field. Oxford scientists also have a great collaborative and team spirit, in this case to fight COVID-19.
