What makes Oxford such a good place to work in AI?

Oxford is a wonderful place for cutting-edge research in all disciplines. I'm particularly thrilled to work in the Oxford Internet Institute, which is a highly interdisciplinary department dedicated to studying the social science of the internet. In particular, the Computational Propaganda Project explores important aspects of political misinformation, political campaigns on social media platforms, and maps the potential threats to democratic processes across the world. Using my skills in AI to contribute to advancing the research agenda of this project gives me immense professional satisfaction.

What is the biggest opportunity or challenge in AI?

The biggest challenge of AI is to understand the pivotal role that it is poised to play in every aspect of human life, ranging from automated decision-making in judgements, bias and accountability in algorithms, self-driving cars, automated weapons, surveillance and widespread loss of jobs to intelligent home devices. We need to address the risks, control narratives and challenge myths with well-reasoned and scientific arguments.

The biggest opportunity of AI is to leverage its potential in areas like food waste management and climate change. It gives us the potential to increase connectivity, bridge digital divides and improve access to high-quality information to make decisions across different sections of society and vulnerable communities in all parts of the world.
