Main area(s) of interest/expertise

I’m interested in how pollinator behaviour is impacted by the spatial and temporal distribution of resources, and how pollinator behaviour in turn affects plant and pollinator gene dispersal, reproductive success, and population genetics.

Why is Oxford a good place to work in research related to environmental challenges?

The great strength of Oxford is the number of high quality researchers across a huge variety of disciplines. My work is possible because I can work with engineers, modellers, taxonomists, and molecular biologists.

What is the biggest environmental challenge facing the planet right now?

Modification and simplification of native ecosystems, through land-use change and environmental change, is driving the loss of individual species, disruption of species interactions, and the breakdown of ecosystem function. These changes pose a threat to the survival of the remaining species, including ourselves.

Despite the challenges, are you optimistic about our future?

There appears to be rising public awareness of the immediacy and extent of the threat posed by environmental change and habitat loss, and increasing pressure for industry and government to act.  That gives me hope.
