Areas of interest
My research interests include technical, legal and ethical aspects of privacy, machine learning, and decentralised systems. My recent work has focused on two strands: human factors of third-party tracking on the web, mobile and internet-of-things devices; and transparency, justice and accountability in profiling and machine learning.
What makes Oxford such a good place to work in AI?
The combination of different disciplines, both within computer science and beyond. Being able to speak to colleagues who have social sciences or legal backgrounds allows for rich and varied discussions which can ground AI in particular social and political contexts.
What is the biggest opportunity or challenge in AI?
One of the biggest challenges is anticipating, identifying and governing the complex, dynamic and interactive effects that AI applications may have once deployed in real-world contexts. Systems designed to serve some narrowly specified goal may end up having undetectable impacts on society, such as exacerbating existing inequalities or creating unexpected perverse incentives for people to game the system.
