Professor Phil Biggin is a Computational Biochemist and Tutorial Fellow at Lady Margaret Hall. He is based in the Department of Biochemistry, where he has been for 20 years now.

What is your main area(s) of interest/expertise?

Development and usage of computational methods to address biological questions, particularly those surrounding membrane proteins and receptors involved in signaling.

What are you working on right now?

Many different projects ranging from how pH controls transport activity through to developing better methods to predict the affinity of how compounds bind to drug targets.  We are currently applying our expertize on the latter in collaboration with IBM Research in an effort to find compounds that bind and inhibit protein targets of SARS-CoV-2.

Why is Oxford a good place to work in this field of research?

There are a number of things but the two most important are:  1) We have access to excellent graduate students and postdocs.  2)  The interactions with potential partners who are world-class in their own right.  Its people that ultimately matter.
