Professor Oliver Pybus is a Professorial Fellow of New College and a Co-Director of the Oxford Martin School Programme on Pandemic Genomics. He is Chief Editor of the open access journal Virus Evolution and holds a Professorship at the Royal Veterinary College.
What is your main area(s) of interest/expertise?
I work in the field of genomic epidemiology, which uses virus genome sequences to track how, when and where viruses transmit and spread, and to understand how the virus evolves and changes through time. It is an inter-disciplinary field that combines genetics, genomics, mathematical epidemiology, computing, spatial geography, and public health.
What are you working on right now?
In Jan and Feb our focus was on analysing the epidemic in China, in collaboration with researchers there. Our work has shown how the virus spread across China and how it was brought under control there through large-scale interventions. Our attention is now on the global pandemic, and we are working to understand how the virus has spread within and among countries. We want to identify epidemic hotspots, estimate the epidemic growth rate, measure the amount of transmission occurring in hospital, and understand how mobility determined virus spread. We are actively supporting researchers worldwide who are attempting to study the virus genome, including in Brazil, China, Ecuador and Thailand.
