Professor Constantin-C. Coussios is Director, Oxford Institute of Biomedical Engineering, Statutory Chair of Biomedical Engineering, Professorial Fellow of Magdalen College.

What is your main area(s) of interest/expertise?

My key areas of expertise are normothermic machine perfusion for organ preservation and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and in device-enhanced drug and vaccine delivery using modalities such as therapeutic ultrasound.

What are you working on right now?

We are working on novel methods of rapid transdermal vaccination (including for COVID-19) and drug delivery, focusing particularly on device-based techniques for instigating and controlling immunological responses in patients. Across the institute, we are seeking to help the NHS with both ventilator development and strategies for ECMO.

Why is Oxford a good place to work in this field of research?

Multi- and cross-disciplinarity! In Oxford, there are virtually no boundaries between the medical, clinical, physical and biochemical sciences, making it an ideal research environment for the rapid translation of cross-cutting technical innovations.
