Dr Moritz Kraemer finished his DPhil in 2017 and is now a Branco Weiss Research Fellow in the Department of Zoology at the University of Oxford and an Associate of the Oxford Martin Programme on Pandemic Genomics Oxford Martin School.

What is your main area(s) of interest/expertise?

His research addresses questions related to the spatial spread of infectious diseases. Specifically he is concerned with the integration of epidemiological, spatial and genomic data and how novel insights can be best used to reduce the burden of infectious pathogens through effective intervention strategies.

What are you working on right now?

Dr Kraemer began building a global line list database of confirmed COVID-19 cases (then known as the 2019-nCov outbreak) in January. This has now evolved into the the Open COVID-19 Data Working Group, which the University of Oxford co-leads alongside Harvard Medical School, Northeastern University and the University of Washington.

Using this data, alongside other global datasets, Dr Kraemer is focused on modelling the impact of human mobility on the spread of COVID-19. He is also looking at how human mobility data and genomic data can inform when lockdowns can and should be lifted.
