Katherine Battle is Director of Malaria Mapping for Elimination, Malaria Atlas Project, Big Data Institute.

Main area(s) of interest/expertise

My research focuses on generating maps of malaria to inform control and elimination operations.  At the Malaria Atlas Project we are working to provide technical support to control programs in order to optimise available resources and accelerate efforts to reduce malaria transmission.

Why is Oxford a good place to work in research related to environmental challenges?

First, the calibre of researcher that the University attracts is invaluable. Environmental problems are multifaceted. The Malaria Atlas Project is a very multidisciplinary team and we are lucky enough to have genuine experts in various fields. In addition, the global reach of the University has facilitated our understanding of the environmental challenges occurring in different contexts. I am so grateful for the partners that we have through the Oxford Tropical Network.

What is the biggest environmental challenge facing the planet right now?

Climate change is already having a large impact on communities around the world through tropical storms, wild fires and food shortage from drought. As people are forced from where they live due to severe climate changes, controlling disease will become increasingly difficult.

Despite the challenges, are you optimistic about our future?

I am! Discussions of environmental challenges are now consistently brought up at meetings and conferences planning future research. We need top minds, like those here at Oxford, working on innovative ways to meet the needs of populations facing changing patterns of weather and disease transmission. The will and interest are there, which is very encouraging.
