Dr Craig Thompson is a Principal Investigator in the Department of Zoology. He studies the antigenic evolution of viruses using structural bioinformatics, phylogenetics and serological analyses informed by mathematical modelling. Based on these analyses, he designs and develops vaccines.

What is your main area(s) of interest/expertise?

The evolution of viral pathogens and the development of vaccines to combat them.

What are you working on right now?

We have developed a serological assay to detect neutralising antibodies to SARS-CoV-2. We’re using it to (i) look at the emergence and progression of SARS-CoV-2 in Scotland, (ii) screen clinical trial samples from the Jenner Institute vaccine trial to determine if their vaccine is inducing a good immune response, and (iii) help identify convalescent plasma donors for a clinical trial run by the National Blood Service (NHSBT). We’re also helping with a few other studies but those are the main ones. You can read a preprint of my latest research here

Why is Oxford a good place to work in this field of research?

In my opinion, Oxford is the best place in the world to undertake research in virology and/or vaccinology due to the concentration of excellent research groups studying viruses, evolution and vaccines. Nowhere else offers such a fantastic environment.
