Professor Cathy Creswell is a clinical psychologist with a particular interest in the development and treatment of common mental health problems in children and young people here in the Departments of Experimental Psychology and Psychiatry.

What is your main area(s) of interest/expertise?

Why some children develop anxiety disorders, and what keeps them going; psychological treatments for anxiety disorders in children and young people; increasing access to evidence based treatments for mental health problems in children and young people, including through the use of digital innovations.

What are you working on right now?

My projects predominantly focus on improving outcomes from psychological interventions for mental health problems in children, and making them more accessible to those that need them. We have recently developed a number of programmes of work to understand and respond to the mental health needs of children and young people in the context of Covid-19, including the Co-SPACE (hyperlink: https://www.psy.ox.ac.uk/research/topic-research-group/supporting-parents-adolescents-and-children-during-epidemics) study to track children and young people’s mental health throughout the pandemic and to help us understand both what is helping and what families need.

Why is Oxford a good place to work in this field of research?

The combination of World-class expertise, enormous energy, and extensive collaboration mean researchers can rapidly respond to current needs and make sure findings reach those who can use them to make sure they ultimately benefit families.
