Oxford men post sixth consecutive win on historic day for Varsity rugby

Oxford's men beat their old rivals 12-6 at Twickenham to win their sixth Varsity rugby union match on the trot – the only time either side has done this since the first match in 1872.

Oxford's feat came despite facing Jamie Roberts, who played for Wales in this summer's World Cup quarter-finals. George Cullen kicked four penalties in a high-quality, high-intensity match.

Oxford winger Tom Stileman was awarded man of the match. He said: 'It was incredible, the guys have put so much into this over the last three months. Full credit to Cambridge, they made it really, really hard.’

Cambridge back Jamie Roberts, who was taken off at half-time with a dead leg, said: 'It was an amazing day, it’s the pinnacle of student sport … Congratulations to Oxford, they thoroughly deserved the win. I’m just really gutted for the lads that we couldn’t get the win.'

It was an historic day for the Varsity match as the women’s match was also held at Twickenham on the same day as the men’s match for the first time.

Cambridge avenged recent defeats by Oxford with an impressive 52-0 win.

More detailed match reports of the men's and women's matches are available on the BBC Sport website.
